Alice Munro Wins Man Booker International Prize

The prize is awarded "is awarded once every two years to a living author for a body of work that has contributed to an achievement in fiction on the world stage. It was first awarded to Ismail Kadaré in 2005 and then to Chinua Achebe in 2007."

This Canadian author`s short stories have appeared in numerous collections as well as in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and the Paris Review.

A fantastic (in the true sense of the word) story of a young man who travels between old New York and through time to a place on the Hudson called Lake of the Coheeries. Read it for amazing descriptive writing of New York City and towns on the Hudson in the nineteenth centrury.

Things I've Been Silent About

Azar Nafisi's memoir of her relationship with her mother while growing up in Tehran is out. I've caught a few interviews with her and just ordered a copy of her book, called Things I've Been Silent About. When Reading Lolita in Tehran was published, I heard Ms. Nafisi lecture, and she is a fascinating speaker. She's touring the U.S. this month, and it's worth the time to go hear her.
