It depends on the market. S40 does not have a strong competitors and there is a market for dumb phones. S60/S80 are two platforms where Android creates a real threat to Symbian.
Symbian OS was designed to please telco operators and was never designed to operate like a netbook or laptop computer. New generation of users expect to see a phone that will be just a tiny computer. Phone should allow to serf the Net using a real browser, make VoIP calls, send photo albums and video clips worldwide, listen music and radio shows, watch tv, take college classes , etc. And do it all FREE of charge. And it will be nice to be able to make an old fashioned phone call sometimes.
Old Operation Systems (like Symbian) were not designed for that and changes are so significant that OS evolution is not fast enough to keep up with the demand and will, eventually, be pushed out.
