Okay, Sprint is getting bashed with criticism over the iPhone 4S’ speed.  Second best is not bad.  In fact, I would rather have the quality.

Let’s get to the discussion about the 3 major players and speed.  Word of warning to investors.  Speed is a moving target.  I am not being funny.  Literally, the whole matter of network speed has been an ever changing target.  Network speeds keep increasing.

What we need to understand is how the carriers have deployed their respective technologies.  Technology deployment is a real world activity, not a theoretical exercise.  How you deploy a technology is a network design and network operations exercise.  These are the fundamental components of a cellular network deployment:

• Frequency Plan
• Cell site coverage
• Cell site capacity
• Cell site sectorization
• Cell site placement
• Antenna height
• Hand off
• MSC design
• MSC backhaul
• Cell site backhaul

This has nothing to with technology.

Has anyone ever been able to do an apples to apple comparison of the all three carriers?

What I find works are:

• Sales
• ARPU
• Customer complaints – percentage of customers in each carrier
• Churn
