I am still trying to understand all of the issues involved in this matter.  Collecting network stats and user/usage information are fundamental components of network design and operations.  From a technical perspective the users’ identities are unknown.  I gather the question is: Is Carrier IQ doing something else with this data?

As far as I can tell all web companies are trying to use user profile information and many of them get away with it because most folks opt-in.  Apple was even tracking users and correlating the usage with the users’ location.  Apple says it is going to atop; of course it took a massive PR campaign to force Apple to admit to it.  I don’t know who is managing Carrier IQ’s leg reg/public affairs work but I can describe it in one word: HORRENDOUS.  It looks like a mess.

I do not blame Sprint for dumping Carrier IQ.  Sprint had no choice the carrier has its hands full with everyday normal competitive issues.

Now all Carrier IQ has to worry about is if any other cellular carrier dumps them.

Problem with Carrier IQ is that it can do much more with simple stats and user / usage information. If is basically a network and keyboard sniffer that can capture all information including keystrokes and send them back to the carrier. So, as you login and submit your password for non-carrier based services they can capture all this information and log it. Even if password information is encrypted Carrier IQ is capturing keystrokes. Web companies do not capture your keystrokes.

Hah!! Good information. Thank you.

I am wondering if Carrier IQ responded to Sen. Al Franken.
