I am interested in how these Blackberry Torch handsets perform.

I will keep my fingers crossed for RIM. I hate to see another great Canadian telecom company go the way of Nortel.

Hopefully the company’s product design team learned from its Storm fiasco.

The NFC is a good add for mobile wallet applications. Having a slide out QWERTY keyboard is good for many people and is a good idea; it might go a long way from losing current long time users. Having a TUI only handset is also a good idea for new users of the Blackberry.

Now all the company has to do is “market” the new phones. The company should not expect any of the carriers to actively promote the phones unless RIM covers the cost of the carriers’ sales and marketing campaigns. RIM’s abysmal marketing efforts have not been successful; therefore it is time to call in for help.

A success for RIM is going to be holding the line. If the company can stabilize its user losses, RIM will be able to say they were successful. So my suggestion to RIM is: make sure your greatest allies, the carriers, promote your handset.

There can be no slipups. Wall Street is unforgiving.

The issue is not the hardware package, unless of course that package is
comparable to or better than an iPod Touch.
The issue is applications and integration and, I believe that battle is
already lost.

You are right about the applications. RIM needs support from the apps development community and the customer base.

I am willing to give the company one shot and only one shot at fixing this mess of theirs. If RIM's new marketing leadership can turn this around and get the development community and the customer base excited, then maybe they have a chance.

Of course, if the company fails to excite either community, then the company will be looking for acquirers.

Apps are important but if they cannot advance enterprise integration – BES –
third parties will continue to eat them alive.
BTW – I suspect they will still have a good quarter and the stock is likely
to rally bc of it.

PJ had a good point about the Marketing efforts done by RIM. It really does seem to be lacking when they launch a new product or they are expecting the carrier to push the product.
