About a year ago, I commented in Wireless Week that RIM was facing an uphill battle and would lose market share. Now the company is in trouble and it may be too late.

Last year I had commented that RIM would lose market share because it was facing a market filled with competitors that were resource-heavy. I had also commented that RIM had to do something drastic in 2010 or else 2011 would be a dismal year.

RIM’s troubles are not over. The company has announced a year too late that it would be supporting the Android platform. A day late and a dollar short. RIM is far behind the competition.

What gee whiz product has RIM developed? There is a lot to selling that has to be done to get a wireless customer excited about any product, unless you are Apple, which has its own built in customer base. RIM is not Apple. Despite the vast number of professionals that use the Blackberry in the world, RIM lacks the fanatical customer base that Apple has.

Integrating the Android technology into the RIM product line will take a year; from a manufacturing and marketing perspective.

Is RIM terminal? Not yet. However, if RIM does not find set the marketplace on fire with a new product this year, RIM might be looking for a company to acquire it.

The market is so dynamic that RIM is facing a potentially devastating year. The company does not own the wireless email application (the application it became famous for) and hence the company has no technology leverage over its competitors. How exactly will RIM stop the bleeding?

RIM’s customer base is shrinking. What will RIM do?

The only thing I can say to investors is: “Get RIM to give you its 2011 business objectives for the year and its action plan for 2011.  Time is not on RIM's side."
