I did not see this one coming. Boy, RIM would be so lucky if Icahn gets a stake in the company and a board seat.
I did not agree with all of Icahn's Motorola strategies. However, in the end the mobility group was purchased by Google. I believe that Carl Icahn’s presence and activism on the Motorola board helped create the Google opportunity. Often times, parties begin to actively think through solutions when it believes there is a key player helping to create value. This is akin to inspiring people to think through tough situations.
I am not sure the RIM patent portfolio is that valuable. The company’s cornerstone technology was wireless email until a federal court found RIM had infringed on NTP’s patents. So I am not sure what RIM has of value. Could Icahn find a way of unlocking value? I lay odds he will find a solution before the RIM Co-CEOs find a solution.
Maybe Icahn will light a fire under this feeble board's seat bottoms.
I wouldn't think that Icahn would make the investment if he didn't already have a way to sell off RIM for the parts.
YEAH, that is my best guess. He may even be able to find a buyer for the entire company.
