I decided to say a bit more about Nokia’s recent changes.
Nokia is currently launching the N8. The problem Nokia is running into in the United States is lack of distribution. Folks may not like it but the global mobile markets still follow the US in terms of business trending; call the US the global benchmark for now; in a year or two it will be China.
Nokia has failed to attract developers as well. The application development community is the “true sales force” of today’s mobile devices. Without application developers out there promoting the N8, Nokia will suffer.
Nokia is suffering from two things right now: lack of innovation and lack of operational focus.
A CEO needs to be a visionary. CEOs do not need to be operational experts or technology but it sure does help. A CEO who lacks vision is a disaster waiting to happen.
I am not worried about Nokia’s technology strength; they have solid engineers. I am worried about the company’s leadership.
Is Stephen Elop the right person for the job? I have no idea. I will say this to Mr. Elop – “You have a year to make significant progress therefore you got to get yourself a sharp executive team. Surround yourself with people not afraid to question you. Surround yourself with people who have a respect for what Nokia has accomplished and yet are able (and willing) to question Nokia’s current norms. Surround yourself with people who can make decisions. Get yourself a second lieutenant who will tell you what you need to hear.”
Elop needs an executive team that believes it can do the impossible. If Elop does not show significant progress by end of 2011, we can be looking at Nokia having to voluntarily restructure itself.
I am keeping my fingers crossed.
