The term restructuring has become popular in mainstream media. Thanks to financial bailouts in the last two years, the term restructuring has entered the lexicon of the average person. Nokia appears to have launched its restructuring ahead of schedule.
Most restructuring experts hate to use the word “restructuring” too often in public; it makes the financial community nervous. Usually, by the time the creditors or equity holders call a restructuring expert for help, it is usually too late to do anything for the company other than say “last rites” for the company.
Restructuring is the act of reorganizing a company’s legal, ownership, operational, and financial structures. Unfortunately, more often than not, restructurings are focused on financial structures. The reasons most restructurings fail are: action is taken too late and the actions are only focused on financial structures.
What is happening to Nokia now? I believe that based on Anssi Vanjoki’s resignation we are seeing a restructuring underway right now.
In the last week, we have heard about two key people leaving from Nokia: Anssi Vanjoki, head of the mobile unit, and Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO of Nokia.
I would say that Nokia is restructuring right now. This restructuring is focused on two aspects of operations; management and technology roadmap.
Just to be clear, I still think that if Stephen Elop, the new CEO of Nokia does not succeed in turning around the company’s fortunes in a year, then we will be seeing a complete restructuring of Nokia – meaning financial and operational. One more thing if Elop does not show significant progress in a year, you can say bye-bye to Elop.
Well since I originally published this posting I received news that the top 5 smartphone platforms are:
1. RIM 2. Apple 3. Google 4. Microsoft 5. Palm
This says a lot for Android and says a lot about Nokia. First the Android platform is becoming very popular. Second, Nokia is not even on the list. Check my website for details of the platform stats.
Elop has his hands full.
