Nokia is still the 800 pound gorilla but it is clearly being challenged. If the company does not take aggressive action it will become another Motorola.

Motorola sat around complacent in the 1990’s, sure that it was the Number One radio and handset vendor in the world and would probably stay Number One. We all know what happened to Motorola. Now I fear we may be seeing the same thing happen to Nokia.

Granted the company still dominates the global handset market but it has been losing market share for the last 3 years and lots of it every year. The company changed out management last year and has taken steps to step up development but the handset business is a highly dynamic business; hence development is an ongoing process.

Despite its Number One status, Nokia should not assume that it cannot be toppled as the world’s Number One maker of handsets. The company has made some great products in the past. “What’s past is prologue”. Nokia is in danger of repeating someone else’s mistakes.

Nokia may be wondering what it can do to improve its situation. I have made suggestions in past postings on my blog. I have also expressed shock over the company’s inability to leverage its advantages and the various corporate acquisitions it has made since 2007.

Nokia needs some serious outside opinions and help now if it wants to avoid a disaster.

The train has left the station and I am wondering whether Nokia can catch up.

So, is Nokia going to announce that it's dropping Symbian before Mobile World Congress? The odds are that they are going with Windows Phone 7 - big mistake. They have canceled 2 Symbian based product launches in the US and it's just a matter of time before no one wants a Symbian phone in Europe.

My guess is they will stumble again by going with Windows Phone 7.
