The news is China’s laptop and personal computer maker, Lenovo, is buying back the mobile phone division it sold off 2007/2008. Lenovo has been battered by the global recession like all other telecom and technology companies. What makes this news worthy is that the Chinese are a massive global technology force.

Technology convergence in the telecom and computer markets is occurring via the smartphone sector now. Lenovo has seen the light and is acquiring its old division back for about $200 Million.

What is important to note is that China’s largest computer maker is stepping into the smartphone fray. The likelihood of Chinese cellular carriers giving the new Lenovo cell phone division a hand is great.

Unless Lenovo makes a huge error, we will probably see Lenovo’s beta units in the hands of Chinese carriers in 2010. China’s cellular carriers will not be selling the handsets but they will certainly make every effort to help Lenovo in the development of their handsets.

If I were companies like Apple, Nokia, LG, and Motorola, I would start worrying.

So, what makes you think they will be a threat? Do you think this will be true outside of China?

China's government has a strong tendency to throw its muscle behind all of its major technology and industrial companies. Lenovo is already a global supplier. It won't take much for China, the world's largest creditor of nations, to promote it largest personal computer manufacturer. Just remember that China has already reversed engineer the iPhone. China's iPhone may not be better than the iPhone but it is good enough. Unlike most countries, China is willing to invest time and money into its industrial and technology complexes.

Yes. There is plenty of room for another smartphone. iPhone is being made in China because the Chinese allow them to be made and sold in China.

I don't think they can create a new brand for a Smart Phone in the US market. Nokia has not done well with smart phones in the US market. All of Nokia's smart phone sales are in Europe. I think the Chinese will do well with a domestic product, but will have no traction in the US market.
