H-P’s analysis as to why the company dropped its plans to spin off the PC business makes sense to me.  I know I was a big promoter of taking the action.  However, the short term losses are huge to H-P.

Short term losses are usually not a problem to a company as long as the company has a short term and long term plan to replace the losses.  Now the original arguments for getting rid of the PC business made sense and they still do.  The arguments we are hearing today support the side that says why the PC business cannot be dropped; yet no one has put forth a long term plan to keep H-P running smoothly in the long term.

H-P has failed in the smartphone sector and in the tablet sector.  What is left for it?  Solutions are what the company needs.  Should they be in the tablet business?  Yes.  But they failed so now Whitman needs to understand why.

My suggestion is that Meg Whitman use the time she has been unofficially given, the CEO’s Honeymoon period, and start from scratch.  She has 4 quarters to make a dent in this mess or else she will end up joining Leo Apotheker on the unemployment line.
