Comcast – Acquires More Content via NBC Universal Deal – What Does This Mean?

Now that General Electric and Vivendi have negotiated a price for Vivendi's interest in NBC Universal, the entertainment and telecom industries are expecting an announcement about a Comcast acquisition of NBC Universal.

The combined entity will be a huge conglomerate, with many questions about what the final company will look like. The new Comcast will be a telecom and entertainment giant. In short, Comcast is now in an excellent position to merge with Sprint Nextel. As I have stated many times, a Comcast- Sprint Nextel merger would help both companies.

Comcast is the ideal candidate to merge with Sprint Nextel. Comcast has a wireless strategy that relies heavily if not entirely upon Sprint Nextel and Clearwire. Sprint Nextel and Clearwire are using WiMAX for their 4G strategy. Comcast knows nothing about the wireless business and Dan Hesse knows everything about the wireless business.

By combining both companies, Comcast and Sprint Nextel will be able to provide telecom services, online service, interactive media, and entertainment. The combined company would be a force in the media industry and would be one of the greatest threats to wireline and wireless carriers like Verizon and AT&T

Interesting view point on a Comcast / Sprint merger. The big question is do you do it now while Sprint still has a few customers or pick Sprint up as a distressed asset in a few years.

The merger should take place before it reaches such a level fo distress. When companies reach fianncial distress (one step away from bankruptcy) what is left is usually in tatters (understaffed and in disarray). Timing is everything.
