The year 2010 is a critical year for Sprint Nextel. This year is the year when Sprint Nextel needs to clearly set itself on a path of success and hit the road running.

To date, Dan Hesse has done all of those things needed to stabilize the company in the midst of crisis and a massive recession. I think he did a great job. He may not win another Wireless Week carrier leader of the (2010) year award but frankly he deserves it. To anyone who understands turnaround work, he has done an extraordinary job.

Now that all being said; that was in the past. The year 2010 is critical to Sprint Nextel’s future. Dan Hesse needs to make 4G work for Sprint Nextel in 2010.

Making 4G work does not mean that Sprint needs to go positive cash flow on any 4G services. However, making 4G work means it has to at least show a leveling off of subscriber losses. When you are turning around a company you do not set unrealistic goals for the company. When you are turning around a company you set a realistic goal(s) for the company. In the case of Sprint Nextel, you stem subscriber losses and sign up new customers (or get old ones back or both).

Dan Hesse clearly understands that the company needs to add more capacity and value to his network. However, what does that mean? In my opinion it means a “Merger with Comcast”.

So, how is Sprint going to stand out from the crowd? Any new innovative products coming to the Sprint Network first? Apples iSlate? A new Android phone? Anything?

They need to launch a new handset. I have no idea what that new product will be. It will probably be a new smartphone. They should continue what they are doing. More importantly Sprint needs to merge with Comcast.

Event Google's Nexus One no longer stands out as an interesting product, so Sprint is again late to the party.

I agree, it is beginning to look like Sprint needs to pull a rabbit of its hat.

I like the new Sprint ad ... use Sprint 4G to have a better iPhone internet experience. Sprint is building the network, but they need a sexy consumer product deal to get the attention.
