We rented a villa on Fripp Island with two other families for a go-big or go-home “let’s just let the kids play together” kind of vacation. This barrier island in South Carolina was the perfect spot: a quiet, beautiful resort where admittance to the island is only granted to resort guests. We really enjoyed the relaxed island lifestyle, stretching out on luscious white sand, renting bicycles and exploring the marsh, and sampling Lowcountry classics in the restaurants.
This is a great family resort: miles of clean beaches, several pools with nice kiddie pool accommodations, no Spring Break-type nonsense. Fripp Island is also designated as a wildlife sanctuary so the kids saw lots of deer, pelicans, egrets, turtles, and the occasional dolphin dashing through the waves. In the summer months, the resort offers Camp Fripp for kids ages 3-12. Older kids can rent kayaks, mopeds, or join the family for a charter of serious offshore fishing.
If all the family time gets to be too much, the ladies can sneak away to enjoy massage and spa treatments while the guys have two golf courses to choose from. If you want to enjoy the waves without waves of tourists, this is the getaway for you. This is not a vacation for the budget-conscious. But if you’re willing to pay extra for privacy, peace and quiet, good amenities that are close and convenient, and most importantly, fruity drinks served poolside, it’s well-worth the dough.
